North Carolina singer-songwriter William Hinson has been writing songs since he was in sixth grade and has continuously had tremendous success throughout his career thus far. His debut album Everything Will Be Okay released amidst the pandemic in 2020 and features hits such as the title track, “George Harrison”, “Self Love”, “Normal Day” and more. The follow-up sophomore album Turn Your Frown Inside Out is out now and you can listen HERE.
Fresh off his 2023 Spring tour in support of Jordy Searcy, William has been hard at work crafting and finishing his new album. While his previous work has consisted of coffee shop and moody tracks, William still holds his true musicianship through spontaneous styles throughout the new album’s entirety.
The opener to Turn Your Frown Inside Out is of course the title track and if you’re all-too-familiar with William’s music (just as I am), you’ll feel a sense of familiarity, a sense of belonging and feeling like you’re at home. “Social Fitness” features up-beat piano tempos and groovy vocals mixed with captivating lyrics that will be your motivation for at least the next few years. Traveling into “Girly Pop” (he really is a girl’s guy), you’re met with jazzy and acoustic guitar riffs to make you swing your hips. But lyrically, William wrote this song for the depressed girlies out there and it’s actually very sweet.
Previously released 2022 summer single “She’s Hot” (one of my FAVORITE song) provides swaying acoustics and alluring melodies that will make you swoon like never before. Leading into “Paul McCartney”, William seems to admit to realizing he should stop comparing himself to others with money, music and his hero, Paul McCartney. “Normal Night” serves as an ode to “Normal Day” released on his debut album, and features funky beats along with intriguing lyrics such as “Live life while the stars are aligned/And try to act like you belong here/’Cause you belong here.” “Funemployment” tells the story and brings you on the journey of struggling as a musician to produce music, feeling like he’s still at the start, cosplaying a rock n roller and having people tell him to get a job.
“St. Patrick’s Day” presents amusing acoustics and upbeat melodies, while explaining the story of how William “ruins his life” and is basically too drunk to know where he is and what’s going on… But states he can’t wait to do it again. “Sephora Explorer” slows things down and serves as the most romantic track on the album through calming acoustics, ethereal vocals and sweet lyrics. When you hear “I love her - she loves everything” your heart is healed forever. “I Think I Should Call My Mom” is as cute as the title sounds - opening with a sweet voicemail and warms your heart.
Closing out Turn Your Frown Inside Out is “Storm Front” solidifying itself as the album’s closer with comforting strums and emotional lyrics. The song explores different eras and sunny days of a relationship, but the storm front is here to stay. “Storm Front” ends the album perfectly through its touching melodies grace you with closure you deserve.
