After drawing listeners into his compelling musical world with singles such as "Ocean," "Pick Up the Pieces," and, most recently, "Childhood Photographs," British-Mexican alt-pop artist, singer, and songwriter Moy Cohen has released his highly anticipated debut EP Overgrown, available now on all digital platforms.
In Moy’s own words, Overgrown is music from a broken home, an audible manifestation of the profound emotional turmoil he endured while coming of age in a complicated family dynamic. Lush, cinematic arrangements that channel influence from British acts such as Coldplay and James Blake serve as immersive backdrops for poetic stories in which the artist explores his difficult upbringing, delving into his experiences growing up as a child of divorce, as well as the anxiety he battled while facing constant change and yearning for a place to call home.
“For me, ‘Overgrown’ is a double entendre. On one hand, I feel like I grew up quickly with many significant changes early in my life. My parents' messy divorce and its ripple effects, among other things, left me emotionally ‘overgrown’ for my age. I used music to process these difficult emotions and transform them into art, resulting in this EP. On the other hand, I feel like this project itself is ‘overgrown.’ Songs I wrote years ago pot-bound in a private link, and now I am releasing them to let their roots spread in the world.” - Moy Cohen
Produced in Mexico City and mixed by multi-Grammy Award-winning engineer Jerry Boys, Overgrown also includes the moving focus track "Hello Home" a song that Moy wrote when he was 17 and that captures the heart of the EP, reinforcing the themes of change, anxiety, and belonging that he has laced throughout the project’s tracklist.
"You know that feeling when you’ve been away from home for a while, and when you come back, everything seems different? That’s what I tried to capture in 'Hello Home,'" Moy explains. “As a kid, I moved around a lot between Mexico and England, so I became very familiar with that feeling…We kept the sound raw and simple, and I hope you enjoy it."
Five singles were previously released from the EP including "Ocean" which was featured in The CW’s hit series “Walker” starring Jared Padalecki, "Pick Up The Pieces," "Against the Wind," "Stick Around" and the most recent, "Childhood Photographs."
A self-taught musician and insightful songwriter since the age of 13, Moy has received praise from outlets such as Ladygunn and Alt Citizen. His music has aired on BBC Music Introducing, as well as on Chicago’s WLPN-LP 105.5 FM (Lumpen Radio).
