Bethany's Essentials - The Breakdown

If you haven't heard of our newest feature, essentials, check it out on Spotify! Our EIC, Bethany, decided she wanted to create a new future where we all share our favorite songs that are essential to our lives and who we are as humans!

These are my essential songs that I listen to pretty often, haven't heard in a while, describe my life and define me as a person... Buckle up. There's a lot going on here.

Heat Above - Greta Van Fleet: This isn't even my favorite GVF song, but it's definitely my number one favorite song in the entire world. I have the lyrics "ascending to the stars as one" with stars tattooed on me forever. This song came out a week before my twenty-fifth birthday, and February is the edge of Winter. It was such a light when I was very depressed in cold months and it spiritually lifts me up every time I hear it.

Love The Void - Palaye Royale: I had overlooked this song so many times, it's not even funny. I always skipped it. Always paid attention to the "hits". Until one day I started hearing it over and over and over again. I started paying attention to the lyrics - "Stop there I won't let you drop dead in your bedroom" and "Wake up, you'll be just fine". Those were very deep lyrics that really spoke to me. So now it's a part of me.

Still Breathing - Green Day: Definitely not my favorite Green Day song, but the message of it is so meaningful. When this song debuted on Revolution Radio in 2016, it was very special. The lyrics that get me every time are - "As I walked out on the ledge, are you scared to death to live?".

That's What I Like - Bruno Mars: One of the greatest souls I've ever known (a friend who was like a brother) passed recently. We were very close at one point. During our time on Earth together, he was obsessed with 24k Magic by Bruno Mars, and this was the song he would play the most in his car whenever I was with him. It's all about the boujee life and it's always made me think of him. So it's become part of me, just like he did.

The Fire - Lemon Twigs: Literally do not even know what this song is about because I have not dove into Go To School, but this song reminds me of life so much. "It's us", as my sister has stated. It's one of those songs that makes you think about life... For some reason.

Welcome To The Black Parade - My Chemical Romance: If you are my age, or a little older or a little younger, you know this song is THEE emo anthem. This song defines a whole generation of people by a band who was gone from 2013-2019. This song and album are ridiculously apart of me and I didn't even start listening to MCR until I was twenty. But this band and song are just something that you know. Even if it's not your style of music, even if you've never heard this or any MCR song, chances are you've still heard about both. This song is something that will define me for the rest of my life.

Drivers License - jxdn: I know this is not the original version, but it has been played by my boyfriend so many times in his car and it stuck with me. It's my summer song for sure. It's one of those songs that makes me feel comfortable for some reason, but can't really explain why.

Surrender - Cheap Trick: This is kind of a weird song to have on here, but I've heard this song all of my life and I've always loved it. Especially the last few years, it's been on my "on repeat" playlists and the story behind this song is pretty interesting.

Greyhound - Calpurnia: Although Calpurnia is not a band anymore, this is one of my favorite songs in the entire world. It's an essential travel song, it's the first song I learned how to play on guitar. It's the perfect song to listen to when you're sad after a concert, or coming home from a trip, it's one of those songs that makes you feel better. My favorite lyrics are - "I'll be thinking of you when the lights come on".

Safari Song - Greta Van Fleet: If I had to choose one GVF song to describe me, it would be this one. This is my favorite song to hear live. I think it's just an essential track to the soundtrack of my life.

I Want To Hold Your Hand - The Beatles: There are tons of Beatles songs that are better than this one, but this one is just so special to me. It's a cute one. It's a bubble-gum pop one. If I had to choose one song from the "baby Beatles era" as I call it, it would be this one.

Sleep In The Heat - Pup: This song is my absolute favorite by Pup and it would be a sin to not have it on my essentials. When I finally got to hear this song live (twice in 2019) it was as if my prayers had been answered. The song tells such a story and it's really a song that I need in my life.

Gool - Ultra Q: One of my favorite songs ever by one of my favorite bands ever. This song was my first tattoo and is on me forever, so there was no way in hell I would forget about it.

Way With Words - The Wrecks: It would be extremely wrong for this not to be an essential for me, being that it's the inspiration behind the blog name. The song is actually about going through a break up, but I loved the lyrics "You've got a way with words" so much and I thought it would be a perfect name for a blog.

Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic - The Police: Closing out the playlist with such a classic hit by The Police. The Police are the type of band you either love or hate. They're different, they're New Wave, but that's what makes them great. They're unique. This is another one of those songs I identify with.
