I couldn’t wait… You couldn’t either. Even though Halloween isn’t until the last day of October, September is close enough to post a Halloween playlist. You’ll see and hear tracks from Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, my favorite Halloween-ish movies and more. Just a side note: I’m not mentioning every single song on this playlist because not every song has lyrics and it’s entirely too long to talk about every song individually.
This Is Halloween – Marilyn Manson: This playlist starts off with Marilyn Manson’s version of “This Is Halloween” from “Nightmare Before Christmas”. When I was younger, this man used to scare me. I mean, he still kinda does. But I know how to handle him better now. The reason I started off with this one and not the original was because I felt that it gets me really pumped for everything I’m about to listen to. Halloween is my favorite holiday (right behind Christmas), so I’m the kind of person who could live in Halloweentown where it’s Halloween every day. Looking at decorations, watching movies, listening to Halloween music, it’s all there.
Lyrics that hook me:
“It’s our town of Halloween, everybody scream”
“In this town we call home everyone hail to the pumpkin song”
“Life’s no fun without a good scare”
“That’s our job but we’re not mean”
“Every one hail to the pumpkin king now!”
This Is Halloween – Citizens Of Halloween: The OG version. Playlist would not be complete without it.
Lyrics that hook me: (See above)
Living Dead Girl – Rob Zombie: Another man I used to be afraid of… Actually still am. The first time I heard this song my thoughts were, “what the hell is this?” But the more you listen to things, even if you don’t like them at first, you get used to them.
Lyrics that hook me:
“Who has an insatiable lust for the dead? Living dead girl!”
“Crawl on me, sink into me, die for me, living dead girl”
Dragula – Rob Zombie: Another creepy, yet awesome jam from this man. I was probably sixteen or seventeen the first time I heard this song. Aka I was still only listening to pop music so I was probably very terrified by this song. I also love listening to this song when I’m mad. It’s a good one to head bang to when you’re pissed off.
Lyrics that hook me:
“Dig through the ditches and burn through the witches I slam in the back of my dragula!”
Thriller – Michael Jackson: If this isn’t obvious enough and isn’t the number one Halloween song of all time, I don’t know what is. I’ve of course heard this song my entire life, but I was seven when I started listening to this album. And that’s about when I started deciding to listen to this song every Halloween and made it a true tradition. The creepy door opening, the sound of Vincent Price’s creepy voice at the end of the song. It’s the perfect song for every Halloween.
Lyrics that hook me:
“Cause this is thriller, thriller night, and no one’s gonna save you from the beast about to strike”
“You know it’s thriller, thriller night, you’re fighting for your life inside a killer thriller tonight”
Favorite end of the song lyrics:
“Darkness falls across the land, the midnight hour is close at hand”
“The foulest stench is in the air, the funk of forty-thousand years”
“And though you fight to stay alive, your body starts to shiver”
“For no mere mortal can resist the evil of the thriller”
Monster Mash – Bobby “Borris” Pickett: A classic.
Lyrics that hook me:
“They did the monster mash, it was a graveyard smash”
A Nightmare On My Street – DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince: If you don’t know this one, you’ve really been missing out. If you can’t tell by the name, this song was inspired by the hit horror movie, “Nightmare On Elm Street”.
Lyrics that hook me:
“I can’t believe there’s a nightmare – on my street!”
“I’m your DJ now, Princey!”
Bark At The Moon – Ozzy Osborne: This song always reminds me of my friend who is obsessed with Ozzy. When she put on this song one time, I believe we were at my grandparents cabin and hanging out at night on the deck. And she said to me, “Come on! We gotta bark at the moon!” It was hilarious and a found memory I have of this song.
Lyrics that hook me:
“Then when he’s found what he’s looking for, listen in awe and you’ll hear him, bark at the moon”
Highway To Hell – AC/DC: Like numerous tracks on this playlist, I don’t only listen to this song for Halloween time. I have so many memories about this song. When I was in sixth grade, I started really getting into bands like The Beatles, AC/DC, Zeppelin, etc. And I started listening to this song a lot. Another memory I have of this song is I believe either my mom, sister and I, or my best friend, sister and I were listening to this song in the car… On the way to church. We’re not very religious anymore.
Lyrics that hook me:
“I’m on the highway to hell”
“No stop signs, speed limit, nobody’s gonna slow me down”
“Hey Satan, payin’ my dues, playing in a rocking band”
“Hey mama, look at me, I’m on my way to the promise land”
“And I’m going down, all the way”
Time Warp – Rocky Horror Picture Show: Do I even need to explain this one? The first time I heard about this show was because Glee was performing songs from it.
Lyrics that hook me:
“I remember doing the time warp, drinking those moments when”
“Let’s do the time warp again”
“It’s just a jump to the left, and then a step to the right, with your hands on your hips, you bring your knees in tight”
“Well I was walking down the street just having a think, when a snake of a guy gave me an evil wink”
Uma Thurman – Fall Out Boy: No. I have NEVER seen Pulp Fiction and NO you will not yell at me about it. I love this song. I love the little tribute to the Munsters theme song in it at well.
Lyrics that hook me:
“She wants to dance like Uma Thurman, bury me ‘till I confess”
“Put yo put yo v-v-v-venom in me”
“May nothin’ but death do us part”
“I slept in last night’s clothes and tomorrow’s dreams”
Spooky Scary Skeletons – One of my FAVORITE Halloween songs. Ever.
Lyrics that hook me:
“Spooky scary skeletons send shivers down your spine”
Ghostbusters – Ray Parker, Jr.: Definitely my favorite Halloween song. One of my favorite Halloween movies. I loved when Stranger Things paid a huge tribute to it. It’s my number one Halloween jam… WE GOT ONEEEEEE!
Lyrics that hook me:
“Who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters!”
“I ain’t afraid of no ghost”
“Bustin’ makes me feel good”
“The Music Of The Night” – Phantom Of The Opera: I have a few songs from Phantom on this playlist. But this is my absolute favorite. While I must admit I’m not fond of watching the movie as much, this soundtrack has got to be one of my favorite albums of all time. Andrew Lloyd Webber is my all-time favorite music composer and has created so many masterpieces.
Lyrics that hook me:
“Night time sharpens, heightens each sensation”
“Helpless to resist the notes I write, for I compose the music of the night”
“Softly, deftly, music shall caress you”
“Close your eyes and let music set you free, only then can you belong to me”
“Floating, falling, sweet intoxication”
“Touch me, trust me, savor each sensation”
“Help me make the music of the night”
Season Of The Witch – Donovan: I’ll end it with this song. Or if you’re me, you pronounce this song, “Season Of The Bitch”, in which I refer to myself because this is my favorite time of year.
Lyrics that hook me:
“It’s strange, very strange, you’ve got to pick up every stitch”
“Must be the season of the witch”
“When the hippies are out to make it rich”
That’s the Halloween playlist! Please know that when you visit my actual playlist, there will be tons more songs on there. I just listed and talked about my favorite ones. And I also may add more as we approach spooky season even more. You can listen to the full playlist here
