Summer is officially over (whether the weather says so or not) and we're slowly diving into our Fall playlists and articles. We were a little MIA this summer and in 2024 in general, but we're ecstatic for the Autumn season and all it has to offer. With that being said, we're celebrating our five-year anniversary as a music publication this year and we're (finally) working on big projects for it.
In 2022, we created a September playlist, along with a September article that featured our favorite songs for the month. In 2023, we curated September Gurls: Our September Favorites. Now we're back in 2024 to revisit one of our favorite months of the year and embrace our higher selves a little more than usual this time of year. We spent hours revisiting some old favorites from decades past, dreaming of Autumn aesthetic, meditating and resetting for the new season... And now, we're finally ready to share our favorites for this month.
Our Favorite September Tracks
September Gurls - Big Star: Would this really be a September-based article if we didn't include this song? Obviously this song inspired our playlist name and captures our hearts every single year. "September Gurls" was written by Alex Chilton and the power-pop anthem screams summer nostalgia. We visualize bonfires, mountains, nature, cozy drinks and comfy clothes during this song.
Pasadena - Pollyanna: As September approaches, our mood shifts, craving music with gentle acoustics and slower tunes to counterbalance the excitement of summer. "Pasadena" fits the bill perfectly, offering a moody sound that delights our ears as the tones flow smoothly.
This Time Around - Hanson: Ah, this song screams fresh start and reset. For some reason, I always love listening to Hanson the most in Fall and the chorus of this song is so motivating.
P.S.Y.C.H.O.T.I.C. - The Warning: In 2020, I came across The Warning for the first time and encountered Queen Of The Murder Scene, an album that significantly boosted my confidence as a woman. By 2022, I was contemplating leaving a toxic yet well-paying job. During this period, I found myself listening to "P.S.Y.C.H.O.T.I.C." and the entire album frequently, which played a role in inspiring me to make the necessary choice.
Wide Eyes - Badflower: This may be a personal thing, but I'll be graced with Badflower's presence this month and I'm super stoked to see them. I chose "Wide Eyes" because of the dark theme of the song and the lyrics "I'm the typical bitch with the rage."
September Grass - James Taylor: Released in 2002 from Taylor's fifteenth studio album October Road, those familiar soft acoustics ease you into the track as Taylor reconciles we're moving on. As the vocals embrace you as well as remove you from the world, you're taken on a different type of soft journey throughout the track.
Anthem - Greta Van Fleet: "Anthem" is a journey we need to embark on more. The song presents a breath of fresh air in hysteria and allows us to breathe for a moment with its swaying acoustics and comforting vocals. The memorable chorus reminds us that we are all one and can coexist with each other if we truly make the effort.
